Why Your Snails Die and How to Prevent It

Many new snail farmers in Nigeria struggle with snail mortality. Seeing your snails die after investing time and money is frustrating — but most deaths are preventable. At Roovision Snail Farm, we train farmers to manage snails for maximum survival and profit.

Here’s why snails die and how to fix it:

  1. Poor Housing and Ventilation

Snails need proper airflow. Beginners often seal pens completely to prevent escape, causing suffocation and stress.

Prevention:

✔️Ensure adequate ventilation holes

✔️Avoid airtight pens

✔️Keep pens shaded but airy

  1. Overcrowding

Too many snails in one pen leads to competition for food, disease spread, and stress all of which increase mortality.

Prevention:

✔️Maintain 2–4 adult snails per square meter

✔️Separate juveniles from adults

✔️ Expand pens as your farm grows

  1. Poor Feeding Practices

Overfeeding or underfeeding kills snails. Rotten food causes bacteria, while underfeeding slows growth.

Prevention:

✔️Feed leafy greens once daily

✔️Supplement with calcium (e.g., crushed eggshells or powdered oyster shells )

✔️Remove uneaten food promptly

  1. Water and Humidity Issues

Snails are sensitive to moisture. Too dry, and they dehydrate; too wet, and mold or fungus can develop.

Prevention:

✔️Spray pens lightly to maintain humidity

✔️Avoid stagnant water

✔️Monitor soil moisture regularly

  1. Diseases and Parasites

Snails can get bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections, especially in dirty pens.

Prevention:

✔️Remove dead snails immediately

✔️Clean pens regularly when due

✔️Avoid introducing snails from unknown sources
